I'm also interested in finding a DAC that will work for this project, sound quality straight out of the pi is pretty bad! Anyone have a link?

This one from Amazon in Germany works well

I guess all which are detected by linux will work.

Hi Martin !
Great Info THX ! Maybe the MIC input can be used in the future to sample. Perhaps like the Korg Micro Sampler(AutoGate).
Grüss aus HH :-)

Hi!
Good to know that cheap one`s are working! Are they really better than onboard jack?

Hi,
I've tested my old Edirol UA-1X. It works perfectly.

I tested with Behringer UCA-200 , it works perfectly too.
But I'm going to try the i2s-dac, which I recently purchased. I wonder what sw changes are necessary...

I am using a PhatDac with a Pi Zero: https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/phat-dac
The sound quality is very nice.
-
Not USB, uses 3 GPIO pins + 5v and ground. (GPIO 18 is mandatory, so you'll have to map one of the SamplerBox buttons to another pin, and update the code, see: http://www.samplerbox.org/forum/255)
-
Has pinout points so you can solder a jack or RCA output very easily. Also has 3,5mm stereo minijack installed.
-
Is reasonably priced at 10-12£ (UK)
- Supports up to 24bit 192kHz

Following this explanation I2S is the most suitable to audio
https://volumio.org/raspberry-pi-i2s-dac-sounds-so-good/
So I'm looking for instructions to use I2S DAC on PI 2
Thanks !
